This Day In Nigerian History: The Execution of Ken Saro-Wiwa

Monday, November 10, 2014

On Friday, November 10, 1995, the Nigerian military government led by General Sani Abacha executed Ken Saro-Wiwa and eight other men for allegedly masterminding the murder of four Ogoni chiefs. Saro-Wiwa was specifically accused of being an incitement to those who carried out the actual killings.

Born October 10, 1941, Ken Saro-Wiwa was a Nigerian writer and an environmental activist. He is probably better remembered as the president of the Movement for the Survival of the Ogoni People in which capacity he led a non-violent campaign against the environmental degradation of his ancestral homeland by multinational oil companies operating in the area, most notably Royal Dutch Shell.

He was the author of Sozaboy: A Novel in Rotten English.
