Professor Wole Soyinka

Professor Wole Soyinka

Akinwande Oluwole "Wole" Soyinka (Yoruba: pronounced "Shoyinka"; born 13 July 1934) is a Nigerian playwright and poet. He was awarded the 1986 Nobel Prize in Literature, the first African to be so honored. Soyinka has strongly criticised many Nigerian military dictators, especially late General Sanni Abacha, as well as other political tyrannies, including the Mugabe regime in Zimbabwe. Much of his writing has been concerned with "the oppressive boot and the irrelevance of the colour of the foot that wears it".

The picture summary and the first paragraph of this passage have been retrieved from the Wikipedia entry on Wole Soyinka.

On a personal level, he makes for an interesting read any day. I have collected and published on this blog some of his articles which have caught my interest. The links below will take you to them. "Happy reading". Occasionally, you may find that having a dictionary handy may be well-advised. Reading the lines scripted by a literary Nobel laureate can be no mean feat.
